CDMP Batch 6
What was your work background before enrolling in DMI?
I am a traditional marketer and a digital immigrant. My career spans 38 years in marketing management and consultancy, direct selling and distribution, product and business development, consumer and industry research for a number of top companies that belong to different industries. My work experience belongs to a totally different era! I did not want to get stuck in old school or be left behind as the world moved forward on digital. And age was not an excuse not to learn!
What influenced your decision to study and get certified in digital marketing?
I wanted to keep pace with the changes in marketing to and winning over customers. Digital marketing is certainly a huge shift in the way to understand, influence and convince a customer or a client about a product or service. I personally invested in this digital marketing course to learn new skills and open fresh opportunities! After being a full-time employee for the greater part of my career, I may become a small entrepreneur with an online business for my personally handcrafted jewelry. But primarily, I wanted to stay abreast with digital technologies because these are so ubiquitous and can’t be ignored. Worse, you can’t stay clueless about these just because you are from another generation!
Now, I understand and can speak the digital language of my millennial friends, nephews and nieces. I enrolled in the DMI course to get up to speed quickly on more than just the basics about digital marketing. I’m a student for life. I like learning new things. I could have just learned online by watching YouTube, accessing freebie courses, or reading articles about digital marketing. I have lots of books on the topic. But getting certified made the learning more purposeful. It made me accountable to really learn.
Why did you choose to study with DMI?
When I took my graduate degree from one of the premiere private schools in my country, I learned about Pearson as a source of reliable educational materials. When I found out that DMI students had to go through Pearson certification, I knew instantly that the DMI had integrity as a learning institution. I am presently completing with DMI my CPD units to maintain my accreditation as a Certified Digital Marketing Professional. Early 2020, I signed up to become a Power Member to gain access to more learning content. Building a solid theoretical foundation is part of my learning strategy. I’m happy with my investments in the DMI.
How has it helped you in your business or work?
Learning about digital marketing is part of an evolving plan to become an online entrepreneur. Many have started virtual businesses without need for studying digital marketing. I prefer to be theoretically equipped. I believe that in the long run, I am setting up myself for more successes than risks this way.
Since completing the program, how has your career progressed?
As a digital immigrant, my DMI education has made me a more active, confident, and responsible social media user. I’m slowly developing my FB and IG sites for my online business! I am balancing time and energy between being the digital marketer, creative designer and skilled worker of my handcrafted jewelry on weekends and working as an employee on weekdays!
What’s your advice for new students?
Learn as much as you can from the resource speakers, handouts, and exercises. Enjoy the sessions with your classmates. Stay connected with the DMI.
How would you describe your learning experience with DMI?
Very tight but productive sessions each time – with the right resource speakers who were known practitioners leading the discussions, a combination of individual and group work in applying concepts, and most important, a mix of serious learning and fun moments in completing 4 hours of class on Saturday afternoons for 10 consecutive Saturdays! No regrets!
